Abstract
The problem of calculating the parameters of the Kane model from exper imental effective masses is reinvestigated. Conditions for the applica bility of the Kane and Luttinger-Kohn models are derived in terms of e xperimental effective masses. It is found that different definitions o f the Luttinger parameters are used within the Kane model. Some of the parameters of the Kane model are very sensitive to small changes of e ffective masses. The reason for this unexpected instability is analyze d, and its effects on bulk band structures and energy levels from effe ctive mass theory are discussed.
