Abstract
The nucleotide sequence of a 3 kb region downstream of pilC1 in Neisse ria gonorrhoeae MS11 was analyzed. This region contains two open readi ng frames, ORF1 and ORF2, and several repetitive DNA elements. ORF1 en codes an outer membrane protein that shows homology to orf98 of Pedioc occus acidilactici. PCR with primers specific for ORF1 revealed that t he gene is present in all gonococcal strains tested. The other open re ading frame, ORF2, is highly homologous to the putative integral membr ane protein HI1680 of Haemophilus influenzae. (C) 1998 Elsevier Scienc e B.V.
