Abstract
The influence of PMD on soliton transmission at 40 Gbit/s is numerical ly investigated. Maximum transmission distances at 1 dB eye closure pe nalty are calculated for different values of the chromatic dispersion parameter D and the polarisation dispersion parameter D-p. It is found that for D-p less than or equal to 0.1 ps/root km the effects of PMD are negligible, whereas for D-p greater than or equal to 0.6 ps/root k m tbe transmission distances are severely limited. Sliding-frequency f ilters are shown to improve the system performance, for D-p < 0.6 ps/r oot km.
