Renovascular disease (RVD) as a cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD
) has been under-recognized until recently. As the population ages, th
e number of individuals with atherosclerotic RVD will increase, as wil
l the number of patients with renovascular hypertension (RVH) and ESRD
. The anatomic presence of atherosclerotic RVD as a threat to renal fu
nction has become a more pressing concern than that of hypertension se
condary to RVD. This article reviews the causes, assessment, and treat
ment of RVD in older adults.
