This paper presents a new self-tuning stabilizer for enhancement of th
e dynamic stability in power systems. An adaptive control algorithm tr
acks the system operating conditions by using a least-squares identifi
cation technique and the controller is synthesized via a generalized p
redictive control scheme. The stabilizer proposed is evaluated by comp
uter simulation of a single-machine system and the influence of its ma
in design parameters is analysed. The same scheme is then applied to a
multi-machine equivalent of the Southern Brazil power system, The res
ults obtained in the simulation tests for both systems indicate that t
he proposed scheme can be applied to synthesize power system stabilize
