Abstract
A new method for following the kinetics of the hydrolysis and condensa tion of an organotrialkoxysilane at an oil/water interface is introduc ed. The decrease in interfacial tension during the hydrolysis and cond ensation reactions of n-octyltriethoxysilane at the decane/water inter face is measured with a pendant drop method as a function of time and at various bulk concentrations. From these experiments the rate consta nts for the hydrolysis and condensation steps are estimated. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
