Jg. Boothe et al., MOLECULAR FARMING IN PLANTS - OILSEEDS AS VEHICLES FOR THE PRODUCTIONOF PHARMACEUTICAL PROTEINS, Drug development research, 42(3-4), 1997, pp. 172-181
The advantages and limitations of plant-based systems for the producti
on of recombinant biopharmaceutical proteins are discussed in the cont
ext of other host production systems presently available. A novel appr
oach for the purification of recombinant proteins expressed in oilseed
s is described that is based on the targeting of these proteins to see
d oil bodies. The utility of this approach is demonstrated by the puri
fication of the anticoagulant protein hirudin, produced in seeds of Br
assica napus. (C) 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
