In this paper we report about the Electron Spin Resonance signal of te
trahedral amorphous carbon deposited by a Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Are
. We found that two types of non-interacting defects exist. Defects of
one type, giving rise to a lorentzian line-shape, are probably cluste
red. Defects of the other type, giving rise to a gaussian component, a
re diluted in the network and their behaviour is affected by the local
disorder. A discussion about spin-spin and spin-lattice relaxation ti
mes is presented and the origin of the low spin-lattice relaxation tim
e discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
