Lm. Berstein, SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE GENOTOXIC TYPE OF HORMONAL CARCINOGENESIS AND SENESCENCE OF THE REPRODUCTIVE-SYSTEM - ROLE OF SMOKING, The Cancer journal, 11(2), 1998, pp. 68-71
The similarity between the biochemical mechanisms of thegenotoxic type
of hormonal carcinogenesis and the toxic effect of estradiol on hypot
halamic neurones leading to cessation of normal reproductive system fu
nctioning (aging) is analyzed. Smoking is considered as a factor promo
ting transformation of the promotional type of hormonal carcinogenesis
to its genotoxic variant and potentiating neurotoxic/genotoxic effect
s of estradiol in the brain, Methods that may prevent genotoxic and ne
urotoxic effects of estradiol as well as unfavorable consequences of t
he prolonged modifying influence of tobacco smoke are enumerated and s
hould be developed further.
