Epilepsy is a common and often neglected illness in developing countri
es requiring a conscious effort by health workers. especially at commu
nity level, to enhance access to regular treatment and to motivate pat
ients to continue treatment. Effective news drugs have recently come o
n to the market. However. their high cost means that they often cannot
be afforded by poor countries. Strengthening local and national level
organizations may help to motivate health workers and the public, imp
roving health services for those with epilepsy and preventing serious
complications.
