Spin-dependent electronic structures of Ni(110), Ni(110)-p(2 x 1)O and
Ni(110)-c(2 x 2)S were studied by spin-and angle-resolved photoelectr
on spectroscopy along the <(Gamma)over bar>(S) over bar line of Ni(110
) surface Brillouin zone. At a binding energy of about 1.3 eV a signif
icant photoelectron peak is observed near to the S point of the surfac
e Brillouin zone showing up an electron spin polarization of about -9
+/- 1%, i.e. in this peak minority spin electrons are preferred. The d
egree of this spin polarization is found to be reduced upon O and S ad
sorption. The measured data are discussed in comparison with band-stru
cture calculations. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
