The electronic structure of the valence and conduction bands of CrSe,
Cr5Se6 and Cr5S6 has been investigated by means of photoemission and i
nverse-photoemission spectroscopies. The structures just below and abo
ve the Fermi level (E-F) have been attributed to the occupied and unoc
cupied Cr 3d states with t(2g) symmetry in comparison to the results o
f band-structure calculation. The Cr 3d exchange splitting energies ar
e almost unchanged with a value of 3 eV. We have also investigated the
Cr 3d states in the valence bands of the three compounds by means of
Cr 3p-3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The Cr 3d spectrum is co
mposed of a main peak near E-F and a broad structure around 4 eV below
E-F. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
