The combination of high photon flux available from modern insertion de
vice beamlines with efficient electron detection enables photoemission
at variable energies in the keV range while maintaining good energy r
esolution and counting rates. We present data demonstrating the perfor
mance of the Tunable High Energy XPS (THE-XPS) instrument at HASYLAB.
At h nu = 3340 eV, the Ag 3d(5/2) line is measured with 0.8 eV FWHM at
a peak counting rate of 4 x 10(4) s(-1). Example spectra for threshol
d excited Auger emission and total external reflection XPS are shown.
