Abstract
The molecular orientation in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of thiop henol chemisorbed on polycrystalline gold from aqueous solutions has b een investigated by Penning ionization electron spectroscopy (PIES) an d ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The analysis of the re lative band intensity of the Penning spectrum indicates that the pheny l ring in phenyl thiolate stands perpendicular to the substrate plane at room temperature. Upon heating, the phenyl ring becomes tilted in t he layer. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
