An original ultrasonic method for characterizing materials is describe
d here. This method is based on processing the electric impedance due
to the thickness deformation of a piezoelectric disk in contact with t
he material to be investigated. As derailed in previous papers such a
parameter may be modelized using a one-dimensional analytical model. T
hen using the analytical relation for the electric impedance and the d
ata experimentally obtained, we develop the same signal processing tre
atments to determine the acoustic properties (ultrasonic velocity and
attenuation) of the medium in contact with the piezoelectric disk. Fin
ally, the validity of this method is shown by confronting the results
thus obtained with the data given in the literature.
