Clinical experiences as a result of the examination of 50 horses with
tetanus are discussed. The majority of horses experienced the generali
sed form of tetanus. Treatment included sedation with diazepam, fluid
and electrolyte replacement and use of a 5% Ringer-glucose solution, b
y continuous drip infusion, to correct the energy imbalance. Antibioti
cs and tetanus antitoxin were administered parenterally. Placing anima
ls in quiet, darkened surroundings and the local treatment of wounds w
ere also important aspects of the treatment. As a result of this thera
py, 21 horses (41% survived).
