A novel technique of preparation of multilayer assemblies consisting o
f a controlled number of molecular layers of various proteins arranged
according to a predetermined architecture is described. The multilaye
rs were formed by consecutive adsorption of polyanions and positively
charged proteins below their isoelectric point and covalently crosslin
ked via protein amino groups. Polyanions were washed out from the cros
slinked protein assembly by rinsing with buffer in which the net charg
e of the proteins was inverted.
