Experimental results of electro optic Kerr coefficient in a number of
polar-polar organic binary liquid mixtures belonging to aprotic-aproti
c and aprotic-protic categories have been reported for various mole fr
actions. The interaction between the participating components in these
mixtures has been established to be dipole-dipole in nature through d
ipole moment studies for the first time. The variations of dipole mome
nt with mole fraction in these mixtures have been found to follow exac
tly the same trend of the Kerr coefficient. A similar trend is observe
d in the variation of the excess Kerr constant and excess refractive i
ndex for the same molar fractions. IR and NMR studies of these binary
mixtures are pet formed to understand the molecular interactions betwe
en the participating components of the mixtures. (C) 1998 Elsevier Sci
