Jd. Dunitz, A SUPRAMOLECULAR 3-DIMENSIONAL HYDROGEN-BONDED NETWORK WITH POTENTIALAPPLICATION IN CRYSTAL ENGINEERING PARADIGMS, Chemistry, 4(4), 1998, pp. 745-746
The combination of carboxylic acid groups separated by linear spacers
with linking water molecules is shown to yield a three-dimensional sel
f-assembling hydrogen-bonding system that is practically invariant wit
h respect to the length of the spacer. The structure-directing propert
ies of such supramolecular synthons are discussed in terms of their en
coded stereochemical and functional information.
