The authors have investigated bifurcation behaviour in vibrating struc
tures where the discrete branches of the trajectories in the phase pla
ne are so close that it could easily occur that their discrimination w
ould not be achieved. The analysis of such subtle bifurcations require
d prior expectations of the response behaviour. It is hoped that their
presentation will provide new tools in the analysis of defective stru
