Abstract
A new diatom species, Gomphonema pierrebourrellyi, from the upper Mioc ene of Ecuador, is described in light and electronic microscopy. The u ltrastructure of this species demonstrates that it is closely related to the other Gomphonemata; it has however, a unique suite of features possessing similarities with several distinct groups of gomphonemoid d iatoms.
