This paper reviews the decommissioning of nuclear facilities in the Un
ited Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) over the last ten years.
It starts by describing the structural changes in UKAEA that have affe
cted the decommissioning programme and its management. The main projec
ts at each UKAEA site are then described in turn, indicating the good
progress made in the southern sites and the challenging tasks that lie
ahead at Windscale and Dounreay. The paper concludes with some commen
ts on the estimated costs of the UKAEA's nuclear liabilities, experien
ce with management arrangements and a listing of some of the key lesso
ns that have been learned over the past ten years.
