Ap. Gaffka et G. Lawrence, DESIGN AND APPROVAL TESTING OF MODERN TYPE-B PACKAGINGS FOR THE TRANSPORT OF RADIOACTIVE-WASTE AND OTHER MATERIALS, Nuclear energy, 37(2), 1998, pp. 107-112
This paper summarizes the design and approval testing of thr ee new de
signs of type-B packaging which facilitate the transport of intermedia
te-level radioactive materials within the United Kingdom and abroad. T
he packagings are (a) the Nupak-200 type-B(U)F (b) the Transhield-20 t
ype B(U)F (c) the DN3705/DN3726 type-B and type-A packaging family. Al
though approval testing to IAEA regulatory standards applies equally t
o packagings of any one type, the paper emphasizes different aspects o
f this process for each of these designs. To date, three Nupak-200 pac
kagings and two sets of DN3726 types (comprising three containers per
set) have been manufactured for operational service. The DN3705 design
s are currently in the final stages of certification and manufacture,
and certification of the Transhield-20 design is also expected shortly
