A broad emission band centred at 1000 nm is reported in codoped LiNbO3
:Cr:MgO crystals. The intensity of this emission band increases with i
ncreasing MgO concentration at dopant levels higher than 4%. This emis
sion band is attributed to Cr3+ ions substituting into Nb5+ sites. For
MgO concentration levels above 4% a transfer of Cr3+ ions located in
Li+ sites to Nb5+ sites is observed. This redistribution of the Cr3+ i
ons is discussed in terms of the occupation of Li+ vacancies and antis
ites by Mg2+ ions. Time resolved excitation spectra and fluorescence l
ifetime decays of the two kind of Cr3+ ions are reported. (C) 1998 Els
