Enzyme electrophoresis was used to estimate genetic diversity and popu
lation structure of Pyrola japonica KLENZE in Korea. The percent of po
lymorphic loci within the enzymes was 58.8%. Genetic diversity at both
the species level and at the population level was high (Hes = 0.226;
Hep = 0.179, respectively) whereas the extent of the population diverg
ence was relatively low (G(ST) = 0.143). F-IS, a measure of the deviat
ion from random mating within the 14 populations, was 0.184. An indire
ct estimate of the number of migrants per generation (Nm = 1.50) indic
ates that gene flow is moderate among Korean populations of the specie
s. In addition, analysis of fixation indices revealed a substantial he
terozygosity deficiency in some populations and at some loci. This ind
icates that some populations sampled may have been substructured large
ly due to rhizotamous spread and restricted gene flow coupled with fou
nder effects and genetic drift.
