SCREENING OF GESTATIONAL DIABETES IN VICENZA - NORTHERN ITALY

The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of gestational diabe tes mellitus (GDM) using an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in preg nant women with positive screening glucose challenge test (GCT). A gro up of non-diabetic women of the Vicenza Health District (n=1014), aged 18-47 years (mean 29+/-4.6, SD) was examined, GCT and OGTT results we re also evaluated in relation to risk factors, GCT positive results we re 12%, while GDM positive results were 3.9%. By using either chi squa red test corrected by Yates formula or the Fisher test for univariate analysis, a significant relationship between een GCT and pre-pregnant body mass index (BMI) and between GCT and women age was noticed, No re lation between risk factors and GDM was found.
