Purpose: To evaluate the color changes of hybrid ionomers (resin-modif
ied glass ionomers) with and without glaze. Materials and Methods: Spe
cimens of hybrid ionomer restorative materials were measured at baseli
ne and measured again after immersion in five stains (coffee, chlorhex
idine, cola, red wine, and water as control) for 72 hours. Color was m
easured by CIE La*b* on a reflection spectrophotometer. Results: Wate
r produced imperceptible color changes. Coffee and wine produced perce
ptible changes in all samples tested. Red wine was particularly damagi
ng to Advance. Fuji II LC glaze was effective in resisting discolorati
on by chlorhexidine rinse, coffee and wine. Vitremer glaze resisted di
scoloration by chlorhexidine rinse. :Hybrid ionomers are susceptible t
o discoloration by drinks and rinses. Using glaze as directed by manuf
acturer aids in stain resistance.
