SHEARING STRENGTH OF WOOD FROM ABIES PROC ERA

Subject The shearing strength parallel to grain in sapwood and heartwo od of 4 Abies procera Rehd. sample trees (age 96 years) were investiga ted at c. 5 m height. The average shearing strength was c. 9 N/mm(2). There was no significant difference between sapwood and heartwood (tab le 1). The calculated shearing sample size could be considerably reduc ed for the main investigation programme on another 12 sample trees. Th e aim of further investigations is the clarification of the relationsh ip between the shearing behaviour of Abies procera wood in tangential and radial direction as well as the wood density and growth ring struc ture.
