OPA '90 and parallel IMO rules are driving a phased changeover in tank
er design from single-hull to double-hull construction. This paper des
cribes field observations and analyses of two of the more persistent i
nnerbottom design problems: the joint between frame vertical stiffener
s and longitudinals, and panel cracks along the innerbottom/longitudin
al seams. Potential shortcomings in applicable classification society
rules are addressed and possible solutions at both the design and repa
ir stage are offered.
