Income distribution, as reflected in the distribution of household con
sumption expenditure, has shown remarkable stability over four-and-a-h
alf decades in India. India, and south Asia as a whole, have a more eg
alitarian distribution of income relative to other countries. Nor does
income distribution appear to be related to levels of income or the p
ace of growth. What are the factors that have helped in maintaining a
relatively more egalitarian income distribution in India?.
