Abstract
Increased complexity of representations in development probably result s from the differentiation of distributed neural circuits. Axonal diff erentiation plays a crucial role in this process. Axonal differentiati on appears to be achieved in stages, each involving combinations of co nstructive and regressive events controlled by cell intrinsic and cell extrinsic information.
