D. Mareschal et Tr. Shultz, FROM NEURAL CONSTRUCTIVISM TO CHILDRENS COGNITIVE-DEVELOPMENT - BRIDGING THE GAP, Behavioral and brain sciences, 20(4), 1997, pp. 571
Missing from Quartz & Sejnowski's (Q&S's) unique and valuable effort t
o related cognitive development to neural constructivism is an examina
tion of the global emergent properties of adding new neural circuits.
Such emergent properties can be studied with computational models. Mod
eling with generative connectionist networks shows that synaptogenic m
echanisms can account for progressive increases in children's represen
tational power.
