CuO acts as a versatile sintering additive for BaTiO3 ceramics. The re
sponse is shown to exist in three directions: 1. liquid-phase formatio
n at comparatively low temperatures, 2. aptitude as an internal suscep
tor for secondary phase initiated microwave sintering and 3. grain-bou
ndary modifier mostly by incorporation of Cu ions on regular Ti sites
in barium titanate. After a short literature survey own investigations
will be represented by particular attention to the first two points.
