Arene-and alkanesulfonamides were prepared by treatment of the corresp
onding sodium sulfonates with triphenylphosphine dibromide or dichlori
de followed by amines in the presence of triethylamine via sulfonyl ha
lides. Reactions of sodium amino-sulfonates gave cyclized products. Am
idation of p-toluenesulfonic acid with triphenylphosphine dichloride w
as also examined to give N-benzyl-p-toluenesulfonamide. Methyl p-tolue
nesulfonate was obtained by esterification of sodium p-toluenesulfonat
e via p-toluenesulfonyl chloride.
