The effect of Fe3+ on the reduction of Np(VI) with 1,1-dimethylhydrazi
ne in nitric acid media has been studied by spectrophotometry and radi
oactive measurements. The results show that Fe3+ can be reduced by 1,1
-dimethylhydrazine, and acts as a catalyst that markedly accelerates t
he reduction rate of Np(VI) --> Np(V) --> Np(IV). The amount of Np(IV)
from the reduction increases with increasing concentrations of Fe3+,
1,1-dimethylhydrazine and nitric acid.
