In the process of cutting with an abrasive water suspension jet (the s
o-called WASS process), a suspension of water and fine-grained solids
particles is forced through a nozzle. With the support of the German F
ederation Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), the process was
first used in nuclear technology for decommissioning the Kahl Experime
ntal Nuclear Power Station (VAK). The lower section of the core barrel
was cut apart by this cold cutting technique. Other applications are
to be investigated.
