In pregnant females of the viviparous cockroach, Nauphoeta cinerea (Ol
ivier 1789), mass specific metabolic heat flux was significantly reduc
ed compared to males and non-pregnant females. This means that energet
ic demands during gestation do not translate into an increase in energ
y of metabolic rate. The reduction possibly cannot be put down to the
fact, that the locomotor activity of N cinerea is considerably reduced
during pregnancy.
