This article concerns custody of young children in foster care. The au
thors describe an intensive intervention program for maltreated infant
s and their parents. A multidisciplinary team works to provide integra
ted and coherent assessments and treatments for maltreated infants and
toddlers placed in foster care. The article begins by describing the
legal context of the program, and then outlines the process of assessm
ents, involvement with complex systems-especially the legal and child
welfare systems-and the interventions provided. Finally, the authors a
ddress complex struggles with which clinicians in the program must gra
pple, including ethical dilemmas and countertransference as experience
