The work presented in this paper investigates the design of optimal co
ntrol to suppress vibrations in a structure with limitations on the ac
tuator forces. The limits on the control ensure realistic results. The
objective functions used for the two approaches were minimum time and
the quadratic performance index. The minimum time system is convenien
t to adopt when the number of actuators is equal to the number of degr
ees of freedom in a sructural model used for control design. The LQR w
ith bounded control can be used even when the number of actuators is s
maller than the number of degrees of freedom. The transient responses
of the two approaches are compared. An idealized wing structure with 2
4 degrees of freedom and four actuators was studied with different lim
its on the control forces and control weighting parameters. The criter
ia selected for comparison for control designs were the root mean squa
re responses and the total deviation.
