The paper starts with the discussion of the present way of teaching co
mputer simulation and contrasts it with leaching the same subject with
the help of multimedia instruments. The practical implementations of
the main principles are demonstrated with the help of multimedia teach
ing materials, which are PC stand alone applications for teaching comp
uter simulation in the fields of mathematical ecology and queuing syst
ems. After discussing several technical problems, we discuss how the s
imulation software can be extended as well as a simulation language to
support multimedia possibilities. Future work will involve distance e
ducation applications using computer networks. (C) 1998 IMACS/Elsevier
