Abstract
It is found that Zn complex based units are present in a number of nuc leic acid binding and gene regulatory proteins. The Zn is a crucial co mponent of the tertiary structure of ''Zn-finger'' since the two invar iant cysteines and two invariant histidines which constitute each of t he nine tandem repeats of amino acid motif are coordinated to Zn in a tetrahedral configuration (Zn-core). An attempt has been made to reaso n why Zn is present in ''Zn-fingers'' based on the assessment of the s tability aspect of the core with Zn and Co.
