R. Sarin et al., DEVELOPMENT OF N-CONTAINING, P-CONTAINING AND S-CONTAINING MULTIFUNCTIONAL ADDITIVES FOR LUBRICANTS, Lubrication engineering, 53(5), 1997, pp. 21-27
Metallic dialkyldithiophosphates, namely, ZDDP, are widely used in for
mulating lubricants to enhance their antioxidant, antiwear, extreme pr
essure and antifriction properties. These ash bearing additives lead t
o operational problems and the use of some metals is being restricted
for environmental resasons. This paper describes the synthesis and eva
luation of a new class of alkylamino phosphorodithioates for use as ad
ditives in lubricant formulations. Eight ashless alkylamino phosphorod
ithioates with varying alkyl chain lengths from C5 to C18 have been sy
nthesized and their antiwear, antifriction, extreme pressure and antio
xidant performance examined compared to a commercial ZDDP in a mineral
base oil. The synthesized products have been found to exhibit appreci
able antiwear and antioxidant properties and mild antifriction/extreme
pressure performance.
