Abstract
The local variation of the smectic-A-smectic-C transition temperature T-c is treated within the Landau-Ginzburg model. The averaged thermody namic free energy of the smectic-C phase is also calculated within the Gaussian approximation. The equilibrium value of the order parameter shows a systematic depression, whereas the critical exponent beta rema ins unchanged. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
