We surveyed Emperor Geese (Chen canagica) in western Alaska for avian
hematozoa. Blood smears were collected from 134 adults and goslings in
late July 1996, on their breeding grounds on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delt
a. One of 134 (0.7%) Emperor Geese harbored Leucocytozoon simondi, rep
resenting a new host record for this parasite. No other hematozoa were
detected. This is one of few reports of avian blood parasites from th
e arctic tundra.
