Abstract
The topics dealt with at the Cladoceran Symposium showed a large diver sity. A high diversity is what characterises the world we study, consi sting of many different habitats and a rich species set. This easily l eads to anecdotal research which then prevents the building of a consi stent and sophisticated body of knowledge. The contribution of cladoce ran research to general ecological theory is limited as a look in text books reveals. Therefore, choices have to be made for future research and a few suggestions to this extent are shortly mentioned in this ess ay in consequence of the Symposium on Cladocera held in Postojna (Slov enia), August 1996.
