Re. Mayer, WEATHERING PATTERNS IN THE CHELMSFORD SAN DSTONE FORMATION, SUDBURY, ONTARIO, CANADA, Zeitschrift fur Geomorphologie, 42(1), 1998, pp. 89-96
Examples of surficial weathered sandstone have been studied in the Che
lmsford Formation located in the Sudbury Basin, Canada during the two
field seasons 1992 and 1993. Dynamism of scaling, patina and cavities
is pieced together in arkosic sandstones of the Sudbury Basin. Pothole
s are the results of the weathering of concretions and cement. Process
es involved are oxidation, hydrolysis and hydration. The combination o
f several factors such as the presence of the concretions, the mid-lat
itude humid continental climate, the emission from the smokestacks of
the mining industries, the bedrock topography, the precipitation and t
emperatures lead to a better understanding of the weathering dynamism
of the arkosic sandstone.
