The photochemical Chapman model is generalized using those constituent
s and reactions that are relevant in the mesosphere. The model constit
utes a non-linear, non-autonomous dynamical system. We analyze some of
its properties; especially periodical and asymptotically stable solut
ions. Bifurcation phenomena are discussed. The comparison with ozone m
easurements through microwave spectroscopy and furthermore with models
which include dynamical and transport processes show that a photochem
ical model leads to a reasonable description of the ozone concentratio
n in the mesosphere. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
