A method was developed and the corresponding device was constructed fo
r monitoring and measurement of a deuteron beam polarization. The meth
od is based on the measurement of quasi-elastic proton-proton scatteri
ng on a hydrogen-containing target (CH2). The measured asymmetry is di
rectly related both to the vector polarization of the extracted deuter
on beam and to the polarizations of neutrons and protons in the deuter
ons. The polarimeter was used in experiments on the JINR synchrophasot
ron using a deuteron beam with an intensity of 2 x 10(9) particles per
spill and deuteron momenta ranging from 3.0 to 9.0 GeV/c. This method
offers some advantages over the conventional technique based on the p
olarization determination from the elastic dp-scattering asymmetry, an
d allows virtually on-line evaluation of the deuteron beam vector pola
rization.
