The Peng-Robinson-Stryjek-Vera equation of state (Stryjek, R.; Vera J.
H. Can. J. Chem. Eng. 1986, 64, 334-340) was used with the Wong-Sandl
er mixing rule (1992) and the activity coefficient model of Chen et al
. (AIChE J. 1982, 28, 588-596) to calculate osmotic coefficients and v
apor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) values of electrolyte solutions. The osm
otic coefficients calculated by this approach agree with those calcula
ted from the original Chen model. The approach was also used to repres
ent VLE for three ethanol-water-salt systems. The average absolute dev
iations of the calculated temperatures were around 1 K, and those of t
he calculated vapor-phase compositions were between 0.01 and 0.02 mole
fraction.
