The R-curve behaviour of ceramic materials is often caused by friction
-induced bridging effects between the crack faces. The related bridgin
g stresses are commonly assumed to be material specific properties. It
will be shown in this paper that the bridging stress relation depends
on the specimen geometry and the loading mode. The reason for this be
haviour is the x-stress component caused by the crack itself. (C) 1998
